The ASRT reports the following on Kentucky’s recent law providing for this historic peer review board:
Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has signed H.B. 137 into law creating a state board to license and regulate radiologic technologists.
The new law creates the Kentucky Board for Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy. The board has regulatory authority to establish licensure and regulatory standards for the state’s medical imaging and radiation therapy personnel. Prior to enacting the law, Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family services managed the licensing and regulation process.
“By establishing the Kentucky Board for Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, our elected officials are showing their commitment to making sure that experienced, educated and knowledgeable personnel are managing the licensing process for the individuals performing medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures,” said Jacklynn Darling, M.S., M.A., R.T. (R)(M), president of the Kentucky Society of Radiologic Technologists.
The board will consist of nine members appointed by the governor: two licensed radiographers, two licensed radiographers with post-primary certifications, one licensed nuclear medicine technologist, one licensed radiation therapist, one licensed limited x-ray machine operator, one licensed radiologic science educator or manager and one member of the general public.
“This historic legislation is a positive step toward improving patient care,” added Darling. “The board will oversee the regulatory process to make sure that all medical imaging and radiation therapy personnel are educationally prepared and clinically qualified before performing procedures.”
The Kentucky Society of Radiologic Technologist’s is proud to support the creation of this board and looks forward to working together with this professional board to make Kentucky one of the best states to live and work in as an imaging or therapy professional.
